A high protein diet plan can be beneficial to your health.
The high protein diet plan has generated a lot of hype in the last few years. So what exactly is the logic behind the diet plan?
The idea behind the diet is that protein can suppress hunger as well, or better than carbs and fats. This is beneficial since each gram of protein contains only 4 calories while each fat gram contains 9 calories. Filling up with less than half the calories is definitely a good thing for those looking to lean up.
In addition to containing fewer calories per gram than fat, protein also takes longer to digest. This means you consume fewer calories to become full and your appetite is satisfied longer.
A high protein diet plan is typically combined with a low carbohydrate plan. Since many people consume more carbohydrates than their body needs, they are burning carbs for energy since it is so readily available and easily digested. However, excess carbs in their system are turned to fat by insulin that is trying to keep their blood sugar levels stable.
By restricting carbs and increasing protein, your body enters a state of ketosis. That means it burns its own fat for energy instead of all the carbs. Specifically, you body burns ketones, little carbon molecules that are the result of the breakdown of fat stores.
When your body is in ketosis, you tend to feel less hungry. Of course, this translates into eating even less.
However, ketosis does have some unpleasant side effects. Some people tend to suffer unusual breath odor while others suffer from constipation.
One of the most popular high protein diets available today is the Atkins diet. This also happens to be a featured diet plan available from
eDiets
.
Another high protein diet, maybe less popular but no less effective is the
Medifast diet
. This is a clinically proven diet with 25 years of success behind it.
